Work underway to amend information at gravesites at Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin.

An extensive historical review by the Congregation of Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd in Dublin (OLCGS) has resulted in significant amendments to the High Park and Sean McDermott Street gravesites in Glasnevin, Dublin. New headstones are being erected, gravesites enhanced and significant amendments to the information on headstones are being carried out.

A myriad of other historical records and sources were accessed to ensure the records, spanning over 170 years, were as accurate as possible.  These included the historical archives of the Congregation, the Dublin Cemeteries Trust website and the Irish Genealogy website.

The review process revealed errors and omissions from headstones on the gravesites. In all, 327 names were not recorded on any headstone.  Some names were on headstones with no historical evidence that the individuals are buried there.

The Congregation has engaged the services of a Memorial company who has spent the past number of months upgrading and carrying out work. New headstones have replaced older ones, and missing names have been added to the appropriate site. Three new headstones have also been erected with names engraved that were not recorded in the past. There have also been amendments to some names and dates.

During the course of the review, it emerged that three more gravesites existed belonging to the Congregation. The next phase of work will involve a similar body of work that has just been completed to ensure that the historical records are as accurate as possible and that the memory of the deceased is treated with dignity and respect.
